Francesca Merolla is a contemporary dancer, performer and movement facilitator based in Cologne, Germany. Trained in classical ballet, hip-hop, acrobatics, and jazz in Italy and Canada, she completed her professional education as contemporary dancer at Iwanson International in Munich in 2016. Her artistic practice blends floorwork, contact partnering, and acrobatics, while integrating practices like circus, parkour, and natural movement. The drive of her work investigates movement as a tool to foster presence, aliveness, and embodied connection in a fast-paced, virtual world.
Her career spans theatrical productions, dance ensembles, site-specific creations and interdisciplinary collaborations, including engagements with the ŻfinMalta National Dance Ensemble, Volkstheater Rostock (Chronos by Elias Lazaridis), Song of the Goat Theatre (ISLAND by Ivan Pérez and Grzegorz Bral), B’cause Dance Company, and Azimuth Arts and Dance Ensemble. Recently she collaborated with Theater Bonn (Awakening), Cologne Opera (Die Schöpfung by Melly Still), XXTanztheater(La Pola) and Unanim Kollektiv (Lower Level), performing in venues like Museum Ludwig, Favoriten Festival, Tanzfaktur Rhein Festival, Zeit für Zirkus and Circus Dance Festival.
Merolla’s work extends beyond the stage also into music videos (Time to Grow by Les Enfants Sauvage, My Body Is the Only Place by Kira Hummen) and site-specific projects, such as To My Roots, Unknown (La Corrupta Dance Festival, Cologne) and Invisibe Dances (Art After Lockdown).
At the core of her practice is a commitment to making movement accessible and meaningful. Along her Master’s in Dance Mediation at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, she deepened her focus on accessible performance and audience engagement. Her teaching spans classes for all levels, workshops, and professional training, rooted in floorwork, contact partnering, and acrobatics. These trainings are currently available in contexts like Profitraining Köln, Tanzxchange Münster, and Tankfaktur, as well as in private sessions upon request.
Driven by a belief in the body’s power to foster connection, Francesca continues to be involved in work and creations that challenge the boundaries between performer and audience, inviting people into shared physical experiences that work towards a new understanding between performance and public.
